Dog Types
Taking its name from the German court of Weimar, this breed is nick-named the 'grey ghost' because of its silvery coat color. The Weimeraner was originally a large game dog, probably springing from the same stock as that which produced other German hunting breeds. As big game hunting declined in Germany, the breed was used on various game birds and as a water retriever. Although also a companion dog, this is primarily one of the hunt, point and retrieve breeds so hunting ability is of paramount importance. There are two varieties of coat, the most popular is short, smooth and sleek, the other is long, from 2.5—5 cm (1-2 in) on the body, longer on the neck, chest and belly with a feathered tail and backs of limbs. The eyes are in shades of amber or blue-grey. One of the tallest gun-dogs, its height is 56-69 cm (22—27 in) and although not specified in the British breed standard, weight is tends to be 32-39 kg (70.5—86 lb).The Weimeraner is fearless, friendly, protective, obedient and alert. |
