Dog Types
The naturalist's urrary gives a somewhat uncomplimentary description of Bull breeds as described by the Romans, their Tips sordid and hanging loose, looking like monsters'. The writer of 1840 acknowledged that what he described as the Bull-Dog known then was smaller than similar breeds described centuries earlier, but still they proved more than a match for a caged lion. Of moderate size, the Bull-Dog was molded for strength and elasticity. With its lower jaw projecting beyond the upper and frequent redness about the eyes, the breed produced a most forbidding aspect. A Bull-Dog had been witnessed pinning down an American bison, although the outcome was that the dog came off worse in the end. |
