The first variety was smooth, rounded and rather elegant, usually black in color with tan spots over the eyes and the same color on the belly and other extremities. Sometimes these terriers were also white. Their muzzle was sharp, their eyes bright and lively, the ears pointed or slightly-turned down, while the tail was carried high and was rather bowed. The second variety was considered a 'more genuine' breed, usually called the wire-haired or Scottish terrier, although they were also sometimes known as the Isle of Skye Terrier. The muzzle was shorter and fuller, the limbs more stout and the coat hard and shaggy. In color the Scottish terrier was a pale sandy or ochre, sometimes white.
