Dog Types
At the end of the eighteenth century the Sussex Spaniel was developed especially to work as a retriever in dense undergrowth on big sporting estates. Not as quick as some other types of spaniel, the breed has a tendency to give tongue or to bark on scent, a trait rather unusual amongst gundogs. With a wide skull and frowning brows, the heavily and strongly built Sussex Spaniel has natural, albeit slightly slow, working ability. The breed is active and energetic with a characteristic rolling gait. The thick, fairly large, lobular ears are set just above eye level and the hazel-colored eyes with their soft expression do not show much haw. Of kindly disposition, this is a very suitable family dog in a country household. The rich, golden-liver coat is abundant and flat with an ample undercoat for weather resistance. The dog has a long, wide back, which is well muscled. Height is 38-41 cm (15-16 in) and weight approximately 23 kg (50 lb). |
