Dog Types
The Spanish water dog is little known outside Spain, and in Britain, although it is recognized by the Kennel Club, no official breed standard has yet been approved. In Spain the breed is used mainly for herding sheep, goats and some cattle, but also to retrieve ducks and to retrieve fish from outside the net, diving under the water aided by webbed toes. References to an ancient Spanish Water Dog date back to the tenth century and its ancestry is believed to be Andalucian. Size varies considerably, with height from 38-50 cm (15-19.5 in) and weight 12-20 kg (26.5—44 lb).The woolly coat is curly and does not shed but forms heavy cords when long. The coat may be clipped but should be the same length all over. Colors are black, brown, white or parti-colored with white, but never tri-colored. The Spanish Water Dog is faithful, obedient and has an even temperament. |
