Dog Types
Although believed originally to have been Spanish, this dog is considered to have become an English breed over the last two or three centuries. The Spanish Pointer is thought to have been crossed with the French Hound and later the Foxhound, improving both stamina and conformation. The breed first came to Britain around 1650 and was used with Greyhounds for hare coursing: the Pointer finding the hare and the Greyhound chasing it. Symmetrical and well built, the general outline of the Pointer is a series of graceful curves. This is an aristocratic dog, alert and with an appearance of both strength and speed. Of a kind and even disposition, this breed is an excellent working gundog, used to search out game ahead of the guns. The fine, short, hard coat is perfectly smooth and straight with a sheen and is found in a variety of colors. Height is 61-69 cm (24-27 in) and weight usually 20-30 kg (44-66 lb). |
