Dog Types
From the Netherlands comes the Kooikerhondje, the brightly colored coat of clear orange-red color on a white background used to attract swimming ducks, luring them into netting traps, although they were not used exclusively as decoy dogs. The breed fell into decline but was rescued from almost total obscurity in the 1940s, but was not introduced to Britain until 1985. The breed has a high head carriage and the well feathered tail with its white plume is carried either level with the back or slightly above. A friendly breed, good natured and alert, the Kooikerhondje is both versatile and adaptable, making a good household pet. They usually love water and are excellent swimmers. Height is 35-40 cm (14-16 in) and weight generally 9—11 kg (20-24 lb).The medium-long, double coat is slightly waved or straight and a white blaze on the head is preferred. |
