Dog Types
The exact origins of the Irish Water Spaniel remain obscure. It has been said that the breed was a manufactured one, the result of experiments in crossing Poodles, spaniels and Bloodhounds. However it is generally believed to have evolved from dogs which originated in Persia, finding their way to Ireland via Spain. An Irish reference to 'water dogs that pursue water fowl' dates from 1600. The tallest member of the spaniel family at 51-58 cm (20-23 in), this is a smart, upstanding and strongly built animal, an enduring, versatile Gundog used for all types of shooting, particularly wildfowling. Weight usually ranges from 20-30 kg (45-65 lb). Although initially-aloof, the Irish Water Spaniel has an endearing sense of humor, a stable disposition and an affectionate temperament. The rich dark liver coat with its purplish tint is dense, with tight, crisp ringlets and a natural oiliness, so needs careful maintenance. |
