Dog Types
One of two breeds of Irish Setter, the Red and White is the older of the two, indeed early pictures of Setters show that many were nearly all white. Some believe that the two breeds of Irish Setter have always co-existed and that the Red was more popular in the north of Ireland. With few exceptions, at early dog shows in Ireland the two breeds were shown together. Several specimens of the breed were kept in prominent seventeenth and eighteenth century kennels, including that of Lord Rossmore of Monaghan. Athletic rather than racy, the Irish Red and White Setter is strong and powerful. No height or weight guides are given in the English breed standard, although in Ireland height ranges from 57—66 cm (22.5-26 in). Weight tends to be 27-32 kg (60-70 lb). This happy, good-natured dog is affectionate, biddable, highly intelligent and a good worker, deservedly increasing in popularity. The finely textured coat has good feathering. |
