Dog Types
One of the larger French hunting hounds, the Grand Bleu de Gascogne is an ancient breed with origins thought to lie in racing breeds taken to France by Phoenician traders. Used as a scent-trailing, working dog, the breed has a highly developed sense of smell and a deep bay. The Grand Bleu is gentle and kind, the large, long head giving a distinguished look with eyes which have a rather sad, trusting expression. The ears are low set and fine, hanging at least to the tip of the nose and they are curled inward. The coat is smooth and -weather resistant and the color interesting, always with tan spots above the eyes, giving a 'four-eyed' effect. Height ranges from 60—70 cm (23.5—27.5 in) and weight is generally 32-35 kg (71-77 lb). |
