Dog Types
The German long-haired Pointer was developed in the nineteenth century to produce a long-haired gundog with greater versatility. Principal breeds used in the make-up were Spanish Pointers, Irish and Gordon Setters, small Newfoundlands and French Spaniels. This is primarily a working dog, expected to hunt tirelessly all day, retrieving game from land or water. However, the breed also makes a good companion and watchdog.
Introduced to Britain in 1993, no breed standard has yet been issued by the English Kennel Club. By the close of 1998 there were 25 representatives of the breed in England and 11 in Ireland, several already proving their worth in the field. This strong, muscular dog stands 60—66 cm (23.5—26 in) high and weighs about 30 kg (66 lb). Giving an aristocratic appearance, the muzzle and skull are of equal length, the eyes as dark a brown as possible. Body hair is light, smooth or slightly wavy with good undercoat and the colors are brown, various roan colors and brown with white or roan. |
