Dog Types
Believed to have evolved from the Newfoundland and Labrador, probably with Irish and Gordon Setter blood introduced, this was originally known as the Wavy-coated Retriever. Like the Curly-coat, the breed first appeared at the Birmingham Show in 1860. Also known as the gamekeeper's dog, this tireless worker and natural swimmer was used as a working dog on large shooting estates. With a long, nicely molded head, flat skull and intelligent, dark brown or hazel eyes, this is a bright and active dog. The Flat-coat stands 56.5—61.5 cm (22—24 in) with a preferred weight of between 25—36 kg (55—80 lb).The small ears are well set-on, close to the side of the head and the coat is dense, of fine to medium texture and as flat as possible. Generously endowed with natural gundog ability, the breed is full of optimism and friendliness, displayed in an enthusiastic tail. |
