Dog Types
Developed in the late nineteenth century by sportsmen requiring a heavier Spaniel than the Cocker and yet lighter than the Sussex, the two were interbred. Initially the breed became too low to the ground and too long in body, unsuitable for the work needed. Eventually breeding excesses were abandoned and in recent decades a much more workmanlike dog has been produced. Built for activity and endurance, the Field Spaniel is ideal for rough shooting or as a companion for the country dweller, but not suited to city life. Its temperament is docile, sensitive and independent. The head and skull convey the impression of high breeding, character and nobility while the wide-open but almond shaped eyes have tight lids and show no haw, imparting a grave and gentle expression. The black, liver or roan coat is long, flat, glossy and silky in texture and the height is about 45.7 cm (18 in) with the weight from 18-25 kg (40-55 lb). |
