Dog Types
A traditional dog for the rough-shooter, many consider that the English Springer Spaniel is the root from which all land spaniels, except Clumbers, have evolved. The breed standard clearly states that the breed is of ancient and pure origin and that this is the oldest of sporting gundogs. An excellent all-round gundog, the breed's original purpose was finding and springing game for net, falcon or greyhound; now this dog is used to find, flush and retrieve game for the gun. Symmetrically built, merry, active and strong, the English Springer needs regular exercise to maintain fitness and prevent boredom. The breed has a friendly, happy disposition and is amenable and biddable. The straight, weather-resistant coat with moderate feathering is liver and white, black and white, or either of these colors with tan markings. Height is approximately 51 cm (20 in) and weight is usually 22—24 kg (49—53 lb). |
