Dog Types
Of the retrieving breeds, the Curly-coat is one of the oldest, derived from crossing the Irish Water Spaniel, Poodle and Labrador and possibly other retriever breeds and pointers. First shown at the Birmingham Show in I860, the breed was at its most popular as a shooting dog late in the nineteenth century. Although a breed club was formed in 1896 it fell into decline and the present club was founded in 1933. A strong, upstanding dog with a degree of elegance and distinctive black or liver coat it has a thick mass of small, tight, crisp curls lying close to the skin. The Curly-coated Retriever may seem aloof but is bold, friendly, self-confident and independent, a dog which is intelligent, steady and reliable. Needing plenty of exercise, this breed stands 53.3-66 cm (21-26 in) high and weighs around 32-36 kg (70-80 lb). It has an ability to mark the tall of game and remember its location, and is reputed to be brilliant at retrieving wounded duck which lies hidden in rushes or in water. |
