Dog Types
Rather different from other spaniels, the history of the Clumber Spaniel is somewhat unclear. It is likely that the breed came to England from Europe, developed by crossing the old Alpine Spaniel with St Hubert Hounds or Bassets. The Duke of Newcastle was given dogs by the Due de Noailles and these were bred at Clumber Park, Nottingham. The overall appearance of the Clumber denotes strength, the breed being heavily boned and well balanced. Stoical, great hearted and highly intelligent with a determined attitude, this is a silent worker with an excellent nose. Although rather more aloof than other spaniels there is no tendency toward aggression, and the breed's temperament is steady reliable, kind and dignified. The abundant coat is silky and straight, and a plain white body is preferred with lemon markings, though orange is also permissible. A heavy breed, the weight for dogs is ideally 36 kg (80 lb) and for bitches 29.5 kg (65 kg). |
