Dog Types
Off the coast of Maryland in 1807 an English ship was wrecked. The two Newfoundland-type puppies on board were bred, then their descendants crossed with Curly and Flat-coated Retrievers and Otter hounds. By 1885 this breed, which takes its name from the icy waters of Chesapeake Bay, had evolved and was used for retrieving wild duck. An active worker with well-webbed bare feet, the distinctive coat is thick and reasonably short, not over 3.8 cm (1.5 in) long, with harsh, oily outer coat and dense, fine woolly undercoat. Because of working in all sorts of weather conditions, including ice and snow, coat texture is very important. The coat color is that of dead grass (straw to bracken), sedge (red-gold), or any shade of brown. Standing 53.3—66 cm (21—26 in) and weighing around 25-34 kg (55-75 lb), the Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a strong, muscular appearance and with a bright, happy disposition coupled with independence and courage, makes a good guardian and companion. |
