Dog Types
First shown at the Pans Dog Show in 1900, the Brittany had already been known in Europe for centuries. Previously called a Brittany Spaniel, in Britain the breed is a relative newcomer, and one of the hunt, point and retrieve breeds. Although fairly light in weight, the breed is well capable of carrying hare or pheasant and is a strong runner, also at home in water. Although classified in some countries as a spaniel, the Brittan resembles a small setter and works rather like a setter or a pointer. The breeds ancestors almost certainly came from Spain. Workmanlike, compact, lively and squarely built, the Brittany is energetic and intelligent, an affectionate breed, that is always eager to please. The brown or dark brown eyes harmonise in color with the coat, which can be roan or any of the above colors. The ideal height for this breed is 47-50 cm (18—20 in) and weight 13-15 kg (28-33 lb). |
