Dog Types
A fashionable breed in Renaissance Italy, and used for tracking, pointing and retrieving, the Bracco Italiano evolved in Piedmont and Lombardy, possibly the result of crossing the ancient Asiatic Mastiff with the Segugio. Others claim that the breed goes back to the St Hubert Hound. Undoubtedly, both hounds and gundogs are in the breeds ancestry for there was an old practice of mating these together to produce a dog capable of pointing, but with more stamina. The Bracco Italiano is powerful, muscular and lean, the head long and angular with a pronounced occiput. The oval, intelligent eyes are in shades of amber. Jaunty in bearing, this is a gentle breed with a fine, dense, short, glossy coat. Weight ranges between 25-40 kg (55-88 lb). |
