Dog Types
With ancestors depicted on ancient Egyptian tombs, the Basenji has a long lineage. In more recent times, it was used in the Congo as a pack dog to drive game into a net, and individual dogs were much prized. This breed has no bark but emits a characteristic noise which is a mixture of a chortle and a yodel. A medium sized but lightly built dog of 40-43 cm (16-17 in) high, its wrinkled head gives a rather quizzical expression. The coat is short and sleek and the tail curls tightly over the back. Self-confident, friendly and very clean in its habits, the Basenji is odorless and an excellent household companion. Colors of the breed can be striking:-pure black and white; red and white; black, tan and white with tan 'melon pips' and mask; black; or tan and white. The white is on the feet, chest and tail tip but there may also be white legs, blaze and collar. |
