Dog Types
Moving northwards, in the early part of the nineteenth century there is reference to the Asiatic Nootka Dog, seemingly an ancestor of the Eskimo Dog and Newfoundland breeds. A large dog, the Nootka was docile, with pointed, upright cars. Found in white, brown and black, the breed's chief value was its immense amount of coat which was so woolly, dense and fine that it was described as fleece or fur. When shorn off, the coat was described as being 'sufficiently interwoven to lift the whole produce of one animal by grasping a single handful'. This dog's hair was spun, with other hair, into garments and it was thought in the nineteenth century that this breed would have been especially useful if introduced to the peasantry of Norway and Scotland. |
