The afghan is one of the most glamorous of the large breeds, standing 63-74 cm (25-29 in).This magnificent, long-coated dog comes from the mountainous and plains regions of Afghanistan. With an Oriental expression, its eyes look at and through you, conveying an aloof, dignified temperament. A typical Afghan also gives the impression of strength, combining speed with power and moving with a style of high order. Although a most glorious sight, the long coat needs much care and the breed's Eastern personality is often not easy to handle. Not always found, but highly typical of the breed, is a ring at the end of the tail. Another interesting feature is the saddle of short, close hair from the shoulder backwards.
